I'm trying to decide between XLRI Jamshedpur and IIM Calcutta for my MBA. Which one is generally considered better and why?

Choosing between XLRI and IIM Calcutta really depends on what you're aiming for. If you're laser-focused on a career in HR, XLRI is pretty much the gold standard in Asia. But if HR isn't your thing, IIM Calcutta might be a better fit.

Why IIM Calcutta could be a great choice:

The IIM brand carries serious weight, especially outside India.
Bigger batch = more alumni connections worldwide.
You'll see more top-tier companies recruiting for roles in finance, consulting, marketing, and operations. Plus, the alumni network is super strong in finance and consulting.
Kolkata is a metro city, which can be a nice change after being in Jamshedpur.

Why XLRI might be the right pick:

Smaller class sizes mean you'll bond more with your classmates.
They're known for having great gender diversity.
Since a lot of HR heads at big companies are XLRI grads, their placement record is top-notch.
Even students who aren't top performers (academically speaking) still land good jobs because the batch size is smaller. That's not always the case at the bigger IIMs.
One of the biggest private equity funds in the world hires an intern exclusively from XLRI each summer in India.

Culturally, IIM Calcutta and XLRI have more in common with each other than IIM Calcutta does with IIM Ahmedabad or Bangalore.
